The Assistant Grower works alongside the Propagation Manager to successfully grow nursery stock (container and B&B) at Johnson’s Nursery. The ideal candidate is a Horticulture graduate or has 3-5 years of plant production experience with northern hardy or Wisconsin native plants. This role is vital to the health and management of new and existing crops at scale.

Position Details:

  • Full-time, year-round
  • 8-10 hours per day.
  • Overtime and weekends are expected from March through July.

Job Description:

  • Work with the Propagation manager day-to-day to accomplish tasks effectively and efficiently leading a small crew.
  • Duties include but are not limited to;
    • Propagation tasks such as seed collection, cutting preparation, and liner production
    • Plant care such as watering, staking, pruning, fertilizing, and pest management
    • Tracking and prioritizing daily activities
    • Irrigation monitoring
    • Potting – preparing new crops and crops for upshift
    • Inventory Management – keeping an accurate count and status on crops as they grow

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Horticulture or similar degree, or equivalent industry experience (3-5 years in plant production)
  • Knowledge of woody and herbaceous landscape plants in southeastern Wisconsin
  • Knowledge of plant culture to produce northern hardy nursery plants
  • Experience operating farm equipment, machines, and tools
  • Physical and mental toughness required. We all work hard.
  • Good management skills to maintain an efficient work environment
  • Insurable driver’s license a must (through our provider)
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel between our properties
  • Bi-lingual a plus
  • Ability to continuously move and lift 50 or more pounds
  • Attention to detail in verbal and written communication
  • Positive, outgoing attitude with an internal drive to succeed
  • No remote work

Compensation:

$19.00-$22.00 per hour
